Nissan Rogue (T33) 2021-Present Service Manual: Precaution :: Tow Truck Towing

Tow Truck Towing

WARNING:

  • Never ride in a vehicle that is being towed.

  • Never get under your Nissan Ariya vehicle after it has been lifted by a tow truck.

CAUTION:

  • All applicable state or Provincial (in Canada) laws and local laws regarding the towing operation must be obeyed.

  • It is necessary to use proper towing equipment to avoid possible damage to the Nissan Ariya vehicle during towing operation. Towing is in accordance with Towing Procedure Manual at dealer.

  • Always attach safety chains before towing.

  • When towing, check that the transmission, steering system and powertrain are in good order. If any unit is damaged, dollies must be used.

  • Never tow a CVT model from the rear (that is backward) with four wheels on the ground. This may cause serious and expensive damage to the transmission.

NOTE:

If the battery is completely drained, the transmission will not manually shift to other positions. For shifting to other positions, charge the battery or supply power following the jump starting procedure. Push the park button to shift to the P (Park) position before shifting to other positions.

CAUTION:

To avoid the risk of minor injury or property damage:

  • If the 12-volt battery has low or no voltage, the transmission cannot be shifted into neutral. To transport the Nissan Ariya vehicle, it must have all four wheels off the ground and placed on a flatbed or track system.

Front Wheel Drive models with Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

NISSAN recommends that vehicle be towed with the driving (front) wheels off the ground or that a dolly be used as illustrated.

NOTE:

If the electronic parking brake is released, the rear wheels can be grounded while towing. If the electronic parking brake is not released, towing dollies should be used.

CAUTION:

  • Never tow CVT models with the front wheels on the ground or four wheels on the ground (forward or backward), as this may cause serious and expensive damage to the transmission.

If it is necessary to tow the Nissan Ariya vehicle with the rear wheels raised, always use towing dollies under the front wheels.

  • When towing CVT models with the front wheels on towing dollies:

    • Place the ignition switch to the OFF position, and secure the steering wheel in a straight ahead position with a rope or similar device. Never secure the steering wheel by placing the ignition switch to the LOCK position. This may damage the steering lock mechanism.

    • Move the selector lever to the N (Neutral) position.

  • When the battery of Nissan Ariya vehicle equipped with the Intelligent Key system is discharged, your vehicle should be towed with the front wheels on towing dollies or place the Nissan Ariya vehicle on a flat bed truck.

  • When towing front wheel drive CVT model with the rear wheels on the ground (if you do not use towing dollies): Always release the parking brake.

All-Wheel Drive (AWD) models with Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

NISSAN recommends that a dolly be used as illustrated when towing AWD models.

CAUTION:

Never tow AWD models with any of the wheels on the ground as this may cause serious and expensive damage to the powertrain.

Vehicle Recovery (Freeing a Stuck Vehicle)

Vehicle Recovery (Freeing a Stuck Vehicle)

There are two options to recover a stuck vehicle: pulling and rocking

PULLING A STUCK VEHICLE

WARNING:

To avoid vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when recovering a stuck Nissan Ariya vehicle:

  • Contact a professional towing service to recover the vehicle if you have any questions regarding the recovery procedure.

  • Tow chains or cables must be attached only to the main structural members of the Nissan Ariya vehicle. Otherwise, the vehicle body will be damaged.

  • Do not use the vehicle tie-downs to tow or free a stuck Nissan Ariya vehicle.

  • Only use devices specifically designed for vehicle recovery and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Always pull the recovery device straight out from the front of the Nissan Ariya vehicle. Never pull at an angle

  • Route recovery devices so they do not touch any part of the Nissan Ariya vehicle except the attachment point.

If the vehicle is stuck in sand, snow, mud, etc. use a tow strap or other device designed specifically for Nissan Ariya vehicle recovery. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the recovery device.

Rocking a Stuck Vehicle

WARNING:

  • Stand clear of a stuck vehicle.

  • Do not spin your tires at high speed. This could cause them to explode and result in serious injury. Parts of your Nissan Ariya vehicle could also overheat and be damaged.

If the vehicle is stuck in sand, snow, mud, etc., use the following procedure:

  1. Turn off the Vehicle Dynamic Control System.

  2. Make sure the area in front and behind the Nissan Ariya vehicle is clear of obstructions.

  3. Turn the steering wheel right and left to clear an area around the front tires.

  4. Slowly rock the Nissan Ariya vehicle forward and backward.

Shift back and forth between R (Reverse) and D (Drive) (Continuously Variable Transmission models).

Apply the accelerator as little as possible to maintain the rocking motion.

Release the accelerator pedal before shifting between R (Reverse) and D (Drive) (Continuously Variable Transmission models).

Do not spin the tires above 35 mph (55 km/h).

  5. If the Nissan Ariya vehicle cannot be freed after a few tries, contact a professional towing service to remove the vehicle.
