Diagnosis Procedure
CHECK THE BATTERY CABLE
-
Turn ignition switch OFF.
-
Check the battery cable for tightening enough.
NOTE:
Check the continuity between the battery cable and the battery terminal.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>GO TO 2
NO>>Repair or replace battery cable connection.
CHECK ECM INTERMITTENT INCIDENT
Check intermittent incident. Refer to Intermittent Incident.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>GO TO 3.
NO>>Repair or replace ECM connection.
CHECK FUSE
Check that the following fuse is not blowing.

Is the fuse blown (open)?
YES>>Replace the fuse after repairing the applicable circuit. (If the replaced fuse is blown again, check the power supply circuit upstream of IPDM E/R or battery power supply circuit.)
NO>>GO TO 4.
CHECK GROUND CONNECTION
-
Turn ignition switch OFF.
-
Check ground connection E9. Refer to Circuit Inspection.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>GO TO 5.
NO>>Repair or replace ground connection.
CHECK ECM GROUND CIRCUIT
-
Disconnect ECM harness connectors.
-
Check the continuity between ECM harness connector and ground.
ECM Ground Continuity Connector Terminal F72 4 Ground Existed E21 156 157 160
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>GO TO 6.
NO>>Repair or replace error-detected parts.
CHECK ECM POWER SUPPLY (MAIN)-1
-
Reconnect ECM harness connector.
-
Turn ignition switch ON.
-
Check the voltage between ECM harness connector terminals.
ECM Voltage + − Connector Terminal Connector Terminal F72 5 E21 160 Battery voltage E21 153
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>GO TO 7.
NO>>GO TO 8.
CHECK ECM POWER SUPPLY (MAIN)--2

Turn ignition switch OFF and wait at least 10 seconds.
-
Check the voltage between ECM harness connector terminals as per the following.
ECM Condition Voltage
(Approx.)+ − Connector Terminal Connector Terminal F72 5 E21 160 After turning ignition switch OFF, battery voltage will exist for a few seconds Drop to 0 V E21 153
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>GO TO 11.
NO>>GO TO 9.
CHECK ECM POWER SUPPLY (MAIN) CIRCUIT-1

Turn ignition switch OFF.
-
Disconnect ECM harness connectors.
-
Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector.
-
Check the continuity between ECM harness connector and IPDM E/R harness connector.
+ − Continuity ECM IPDM E/R Connector Terminal Connector Terminal F72 5 F35 73 Existed E21 153 -
Also check harness for short to ground.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>Perform the trouble diagnosis for IPDM E/R power supply circuit.
NO>>Repair or replace error-detected parts.
CHECK ECM RELAY CONTROL SIGNAL
Check the voltage between ECM harness connector terminals as per the following.

YES>>Check Intermittent Incident. Refer to Intermittent Incident.
NO>>GO TO 10.
CHECK ECM RELAY CONTROL SIGNAL CIRCUIT

Turn ignition switch OFF.
-
Disconnect ECM harness connector.
-
Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector.
-
Check the continuity between ECM harness connector and IPDM E/R harness connector.
+ − Continuity ECM IPDM E/R Connector Terminal Connector Terminal F72 24 F42 93 Existed -
Also check harness for short to ground and to power.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>Replace IPDM E/R. Refer to Removal and Installation.
NO>>Repair or replace error-detected parts.
CHECK IGNITION SWITCH SIGNAL
-
Turn ignition switch ON.
-
Check the voltage between ECM harness connector terminals.

Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>GO TO 13.
NO>>GO TO 12.
CHECK IGNITION SWITCH SIGNAL CIRCUIT

Turn ignition switch OFF.

Disconnect ECM harness connector.
-
Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector.
-
Check the continuity between ECM harness connector and IPDM E/R harness connector.

Also check harness for short to ground and to power.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>Perform the trouble diagnosis for IPDM E/R power supply circuit.
NO>>Repair or replace error-detected parts.
CHECK ECM POWER SUPPLY (BACK-UP)
Check the voltage between ECM harness connector terminals.

Electric Intake Valve Timing Control Module
Diagnosis Procedure
CHECK FUSE
-
Turn ignition switch OFF.
-
Pull out 5A fuse (No. 76) from IPDM E/R.
-
Check that 5A fuse is not blowing.
Is the fuse blown (open)?
YES>>Replace the fuse after repairing the applicable circuit.
NO>>GO TO 2.
CHECK FUSIBLE LINK
-
Turn ignition switch OFF.
-
Check that the following fusible link is not blowing.
Fusible link No. Capacity F/L-N 40A
Is the fusible link blown (open)?
YES>>Replace the fusible link after repairing the applicable circuit.
NO>>GO TO 3.
CHECK GROUND CONNECTION
Check ground connection E9 and E15. Refer to Ground Inspection in Circuit Inspection.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>GO TO 4.
NO>>Repair or replace error-detected parts.
CHECK ELECTRIC INTAKE VALVE TIMING CONTROL MODULE GROUND CIRCUIT

Disconnect electric intake valve timing control module harness connectors.
-
Check the continuity between electric intake valve timing control module harness connector and ground.
Electric intake valve timing control module — Continuity Connector Terminal F113 43 Ground Existed -
Also check harness for short to power.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>GO TO 5.
NO>>Repair or replace error-detected parts.
CHECK ELECTRIC INTAKE VALVE TIMING CONTROL MODULE POWER SUPPLY

Reconnect electric intake valve timing control module harness connectors.
-
Check the voltage between electric intake valve timing control module harness connector terminals as follows.

Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>GO TO 6.
NO>>Perform trouble diagnosis for power supply circuit.
CHECK IGNITION SWITCH SIGNAL
Check the voltage between electric intake valve timing control module harness connectors as follows.

CHECK IGNITION SWITCH SIGNAL

Turn ignition switch OFF.

Disconnect electric intake valve timing control module harness connectors.
-
Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector.
-
Check the continuity between IPDM E/R harness connector and electric intake valve timing control module harness connector.

Also check harness for short to power and short to ground.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>Perform trouble diagnosis for power supply circuit.
NO>>Repair or replace error-detected parts.
Vcr Control Module
Diagnosis Procedure
CHECK FUSE
-
Turn ignition switch OFF.
-
Pull out 5A fuse (No. 76) from IPDM E/R.
-
Check that 5A fuse is not blowing.
Is the fuse blown (open)?
YES>>Replace the fuse after repairing the applicable circuit.
NO>>GO TO 2.
CHECK FUSIBLE LINK
-
Turn ignition switch OFF.
-
Check that the following fusible link is not blowing.
Fusible link No. Capacity F/L-AA 30A
Is the fusible link blown (open)?
YES>>Replace the fusible link after repairing the applicable circuit.
NO>>GO TO 3.
CHECK GROUND CONNECTION
Check ground connection F9. Refer to Ground Inspection in Circuit Inspection.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>GO TO 4.
NO>>Repair or replace error-detected parts.
CHECK VCR CONTROL MODULE GROUND CIRCUIT
-
Disconnect VCR control module harness connectors.
-
Check the continuity between VCR control module harness connector and ground.
VCR control module — Continuity Connector Terminal F108 1 Ground Existed -
Also check harness for short to power.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>GO TO 5.
NO>>Repair or replace error-detected parts.
CHECK VCR CONTROL MODULE POWER SUPPLY

Reconnect VCR control module harness connectors.
-
Check the voltage between VCR control module harness connector terminals as follows.

Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>GO TO 6.
NO>>Perform trouble diagnosis for power supply circuit.
CHECK IGNITION SWITCH SIGNAL
Check the voltage between VCR control module harness connectors as follows.

Disconnect IPDM E/R harness connector.
-
Check the continuity between IPDM E/R harness connector and VCR control module harness connector.

Also check harness for short to power and short to ground.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES>>Perform trouble diagnosis for power supply circuit.
