Nissan Rogue (T33) 2021-Present Owner’s Manual & User Guide: Avoiding collision and rollover
WARNING
Failure to operate the Nissan Rogue safely and responsibly can result in loss of control or an accident.
Drive defensively and stay alert. Avoid excessive speed, sudden steering, or aggressive maneuvers, as these can cause loss of control. Like any vehicle, the Nissan Rogue can slide or rollover if pushed beyond its limits.
Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Always wear seat belts and instruct passengers to do the same.
On-pavement and off-road precautions
Utility vehicles have a higher rollover rate than passenger cars.
The Nissan Rogue has higher ground clearance to improve visibility and capability, but this also creates a higher center of gravity. It is not designed for high-speed cornering like low-profile sports cars. Avoid sharp turns at high speeds to reduce the risk of rollover.
Off-road recovery
If the wheels leave the pavement, maintain control of the Nissan Rogue by following the steps below:
1. Stay calm.
2. Do not brake abruptly.
3. Hold the steering wheel firmly and keep a straight path.
4. Slowly release the accelerator.
5. When safe, gently steer the Nissan Rogue back toward the road only after reducing speed.
6. When all wheels return to the pavement, stabilize the vehicle in the correct lane.
- If it is unsafe to return to the roadway, slow down and stop in a safe area off the road.
Rapid air pressure loss
A blowout may occur if the tire is punctured, damaged, or driven while under-inflated. This can affect the Nissan Rogue’s handling and stability, especially at highway speeds.
Maintain proper tire pressure and inspect tires regularly.
WARNING
The following can increase the risk of losing control of the Nissan Rogue during a blowout:
- The vehicle may pull toward the flat tire.
- Do not brake suddenly.
- Do not release the accelerator suddenly.
- Do not turn the steering wheel abruptly.
1. Stay calm.
2. Hold the steering wheel firmly.
3. Slowly release the accelerator.
4. Steer toward a safe area away from traffic.
5. Brake gently to stop.
6. Activate hazard flashers and seek roadside assistance or refer to “Changing a flat tire” in the Owner’s Manual.
Drinking alcohol/drugs and driving
WARNING
Never drive the Nissan Rogue under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Impaired driving significantly increases accident risk and injury severity.
Nissan encourages responsible driving. Alcohol affects reaction time, coordination, and judgment. Many people underestimate how quickly impairment occurs.
Remember, drinking and driving don't mix — and the same applies to any kind of drug use, including prescription, over-the-counter, or illegal substances. Never drive your Nissan Rogue if your ability to operate the vehicle is impaired by alcohol, drugs, or any physical condition.
Driving safety precautions
The Nissan Rogue is built for everyday driving and light off-road conditions, but it is not designed for deep mud, deep water, or extreme off-road terrain like a dedicated off-road vehicle. Always consider the limits of the vehicle and adjust your driving accordingly.
Note that Two-Wheel Drive (2WD) versions of the Nissan Rogue have reduced traction and capability compared to All-Wheel Drive (AWD) models, especially in conditions like deep snow, mud, or loose surfaces.
Please follow the driving precautions below:
WARNING
- Drive carefully when off-road and avoid dangerous terrain. Ensure every passenger in the Nissan Rogue is seated with their seat belt fastened to prevent injury over uneven ground.
- Never drive across steep slopes. Instead, approach slopes straight up or straight down. Vehicles like the Nissan Rogue can roll more easily sideways than forward or backward.
- Do not attempt hills that are too steep. Climbing may cause stalling, and descending may lead to loss of speed control. Crossing steep slopes increases rollover risk.
- Avoid shifting ranges while driving downhill, as this may cause loss of vehicle control.
- Slow down when reaching the top of a hill — there may be a drop-off or obstacle ahead.
- If the engine stalls or fails to climb a steep hill, do not turn around. Your Nissan Rogue could tip or roll over. Back down straight in R (Reverse). Never roll backward in N (Neutral) using only the brakes.
- Do not brake heavily on downhill slopes — brakes may overheat, fade, and reduce control. Use light braking and a lower gear to manage speed.
- Secure all cargo. Unsecured items can shift or fly forward when driving over rough terrain, causing injury.
- To prevent raising the center of gravity, do not overload the roof rack (if equipped). Keep heavy items low and forward in the cargo area. Do not install oversized tires — this increases rollover risk.
- Do not grip the inside spokes of the steering wheel during off-road driving. Sudden steering movement may injure your hands. Hold the outside rim instead.
- Ensure every passenger has their seat belt fastened before driving.
- Always keep floor mats in place — floor surfaces may become hot.
- Slow down in strong crosswinds. The Nissan Rogue’s higher center of gravity makes it more sensitive to side winds.
- Do not exceed the traction limits of the tires, even with AWD engaged.
- For AWD models, never raise two wheels off the ground and shift into drive or reverse with the engine running. Doing so may damage the drivetrain or cause unexpected vehicle movement.
- Do not test an AWD Nissan Rogue on a 2-wheel dynamometer or emissions test equipment unless specifically designed for AWD systems. Using the wrong testing equipment may damage the drivetrain or cause unexpected movement.
- Do not excessively spin wheels if a wheel is off the ground (AWD models).
- Aggressive acceleration, sharp steering, or sudden braking may cause loss of control.
- Avoid sharp turns, especially at higher speeds. The Nissan Rogue’s higher center of gravity reduces its cornering ability compared to a sedan. Incorrect driving behavior can lead to loss of control or rollover.
- Always use matching tires of the same size, type, and construction. Install traction devices on the front wheels when driving on slippery roads.
- Check the brakes after driving through mud or water. Wet brakes may not function properly.
- Avoid parking on steep hills. The vehicle could roll and cause injury.
- Driving through sand, mud, or water up to the wheel hubs may require more frequent maintenance. Refer to the maintenance schedule.
- Spinning the front wheels on slippery surfaces may activate the AWD warning message and switch the system temporarily to 2WD, reducing traction. Use extra caution when towing a trailer (AWD models).
