Basic information
Selecting the correct oil
Choosing the correct engine oil grade, quality, and viscosity is essential for ensuring proper engine life and performance. For models like the Nissan Rogue, refer to "Capacities and recommended fluids/lubricants" for the appropriate specifications. NISSAN recommends using an energy-conserving oil to help improve fuel economy.
Select only engine oils that meet American Petroleum Institute (API) or International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) certifications and SAE viscosity standards. These approved oils display the API certification mark on the front of the container.
Oils lacking the specified quality labels should not be used, as they may lead to engine damage.
Oil additives
NISSAN does not recommend the use of any oil additives. When proper oil types are used and maintenance schedules are followed, additives are unnecessary and may negatively affect engine performance, including in the Nissan Rogue.
Do not use oil that may contain contaminants or oil that has been previously used.
Oil viscosity
The viscosity of engine oil changes with temperature. Therefore, selecting the proper viscosity based on expected operating temperatures is important for protecting the engine. Using a viscosity other than recommended may result in serious engine damage. This applies equally to vehicles like the Nissan Rogue.
Selecting the correct oil filter
Your new NISSAN vehicle comes equipped with a high-quality genuine NISSAN oil filter.
When a replacement is needed, use a genuine NISSAN oil filter or an equivalent part as described in the "Change intervals" section to ensure proper engine protection.
Change intervals
The oil and oil filter change intervals are based on using the specified oil and filter quality. Using non-recommended oils or filters, or exceeding the recommended service intervals, may reduce engine life. Damage caused by improper maintenance or incorrect oil/filter selection is not covered by the NISSAN new vehicle limited warranty. This is especially important for maintaining long-term reliability in a Nissan Rogue.
The engine was factory-filled with high-quality oil. There is no need to change this oil before the first recommended service interval.
Oil and filter change frequency depends on driving habits. Operating your vehicle under the following conditions may require more frequent service:
- repeated short-distance trips in cold temperatures
- driving in dusty environments
- extended idling
- towing a trailer
- stop-and-go traffic
Air conditioning system refrigerant and lubricant recommendations
The air conditioning system in your NISSAN vehicle, including the Nissan Rogue, must be charged with the specified refrigerant HFO-1234yf (R-1234yf) and A/C system oil ND-OIL12 (PAG) or an exact equivalent.
CAUTION
Using any refrigerant or oil other than the specified type will cause severe damage to the air conditioning system and require replacement of all major components.
The refrigerant HFO-1234yf (R-1234yf) used in your NISSAN vehicle does not harm the ozone layer. Although this refrigerant is environmentally safer, government regulations require proper recovery and recycling of refrigerant during A/C system service. The air conditioning system should be serviced only by trained and certified technicians (SAE J2845) to ensure safe and correct operation.
A NISSAN dealer has the appropriate tools and trained personnel to recover and recycle refrigerant correctly for your Nissan Rogue.
Only new and SAE J2842 certified evaporator(s) should be used as replacement parts to ensure proper operation and long-term reliability, especially in vehicles like the Nissan Rogue.
A damaged or leaking air conditioning evaporator must never be repaired or replaced with a component taken from a used or salvaged vehicle. To replace a damaged or leaking evaporator, always use new SAE J2842 certified evaporator(s). For correct servicing of the air conditioning system in your Nissan Rogue, it is recommended to visit a NISSAN dealer.
